The Sword of Damocles
The Olympic Trials have come and gone. Since I finished fourth, it is statistically impossible for me obtain the third spot. But, amazingly enough, I am not at all disappointed. Race weekend was an incredible experience; it was the perfect end to the ITU/Olympic chapter of my career.
The race was held in Tuscaloosa, AL in conjunction with collegiate nationals. The town was incredibly supportive of the race and the organization and the course were top notch. The highlight of the trip was the talk I gave at Skyland Elementary school. The school is comprised of mostly underprivileged kids and they see very few speakers. It was a pleasure to share with them my years in sport. Every class in the school made welcome posters and banners. Their enthusiasm was overwhelming.
Race day was truly exciting. The course was lined with spectators cheering us on. A lackluster swim and a bike shoe mishap in transition left me in the chase pack. Although I worked my hardest on the bike, we were unable to overcome the deficit. A good run left me in fourth.
When I crossed the finish line, I felt incredible relief. The drafting sword of Damocles had been lifted. I realized that I would no longer compete in draft-legal races and the conflict between that style of racing and my true passion for long course would no longer be an issue. After the bitter disappointment of not being able to finish the Olympic Trials race in 2004, I knew I had to give it one more shot. I am glad I did.
Train hard. Have fun.
